MERLIN Academy: A new learning module is available

The Academy's new module, ‘Implementing and Evidencing Freshwater and Wetland Restoration’, is now online, offering comprehensive training on nature-based solutions, holistic restoration planning, and monitoring. Participants will gain a deep understanding of key policies like the EU Green Deal and the Nature Restoration Law, develop practical skills for basin-wide project planning and scaling, learn to design and implement effective monitoring programs, and acquire the ability to assess the environmental and socio-economic impacts of restoration efforts. Stay tuned for Module 2, which will focus on stakeholder engagement and governance in freshwater and wetland restoration.

Cutting-edge freshwater restoration awarded at the MERLIN Innovation Awards (MIA)

The MERLIN Innovation Awards (MIA) ceremony in 2025 celebrated cutting-edge approaches to freshwater restoration. ‘River Cleanup’, a Belgian non-profit, won the MIA - Service of the Year award for their community-based approach to cleaning rivers and tackling the root causes of pollution. ‘Wasser 3.0’ won the MIA - Product of the Year award for their ‘Wasser 3.0 PE-X®’ technology, which effectively removes microplastics from polluted water using a modular process that allows for the reuse of the removed microplastics.

New Deliverables: Funding and Sector Strategies for Restoration

MERLIN's commitment to freshwater restoration is highlighted in three new key deliverables. D3.5 highlights the need for diverse funding, urging support for teams navigating private financing. D4.5 offers six sectoral strategies for integrating Nature-based Solutions (NbS), showcasing their business value and promoting cross-sector collaboration. Each emphasise policy and funding support for successful implementation. D4.6 has developed infographics for the six sectors. These graphics have been created to communicate the Sectoral strategies to a wide audience. They provide an accessible and visual summary of each sector’s vision, core actions, and interpretation of Nature-based Solutions (NbS).

Brussels Workshop to Support National Restoration Plans

In a collaborative effort to support the development of National Restoration Plan (NRP), MERLIN joined WaterLANDS, REST-COAST, and SUPERB at a dissemination event in Brussels. The event, targeting EU authorities and restoration stakeholders, featured discussions on scaling up restoration, effective methods and financing, with a strong emphasis on monitoring and evaluation. The participating projects shared their expertise to guide the development of robust and impactful NRPs.
